The Heartsaver CPR Course is a modular comprehensive course for the person who requires a credential (card) documenting successful CPR course completion. Modules that can be taught are adult CPR only, infant and child CPR only, and adult infant and child CPR.
Heartsaver CPR Course Description

Course Description
The Heartsaver CPR Course is a modular course that teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. The program is divided into three different courses, providing choices.

Heartsaver CPR for All Ages
This course teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction in the adult, infant and child.

Heartsaver CPR for Adults
This course teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for the adult.

Heartsaver CPR for Infants and Children
This course teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for infants (birth to 1 year of age) and children (1 year to 8 years of age).
Course Length

All ages: 5 1/2 - 6 hours. .
Adult only: 3 hours.
Infant/child only: 3 hours.
Intended Audience
All lay rescuers, such as employees in the workplace, day care employees, babysitters, firefighters, police, airline personnel, security guards, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, other lay rescuers, and those who may have a need to respond to an emergency

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Heartsaver CPR in Schools course is geared toward teaching students the lifesaving skills of adult and pediatric CPR. It also teaches students how to activate the Emergency Medical Services system when someone in the community suffers sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke or choking. By training our high school students to recognize the warning signs of cardiac arrest and stroke, call 9-1-1 and provide CPR and relief of choking, many lives will be saved.

This course is designed to be taught over multiple 40-minute class periods.

Heartsaver CPR in Schools.Adult and Pediatric 5 1/2 - .6 hours
Heartsaver CPR in Schools.Adult only 3 hours
Heartsaver CPR in Schools.Pediatric only 3 hours

COURSE CONTENT
Adult Module

  • The adult Chain of Survival and the importance of calling 9-1-1
  • Signs of cardiac arrest and stroke
  • Techniques of adult CPR (ABCs)
    • Airway — Opening the airway
    • Breathing — Checking breathing and performing rescue breathing if needed (with and without a barrier device)
    • Circulation — Checking for signs of circulation and performing compressions and ventilations
  • Rescue techniques for
    choking adults

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The CPR for Family and Friends course is a modular course that includes multiple learning activities: a videotaped overview of the Chain of Survival and other cognitive information, videotaped skills demonstration and practice, instructor-led practice scenario and a peer practice session. The intended audience includes family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death and laypersons who want to learn CPR rescue skills for loved ones.

COURSE CONTENT

Adult Module

  • Learn to recognize 4 life-threatening emergencies in adults
    • Heart attack
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Stroke
    • Choking
  • Learn to perform CPR
  • Learn rescue techniques for choking adults

Pediatric Module (infant and child)

  • Learn to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and prevent common injuries and choking in infants and children
  • Learn to recognize the signs of life-threatening emergencies in infants and children
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Breathing difficulties
    • Respiratory arrest
    • Choking
  • Learn to perform CPR and rescue techniques for choking infants and children
  • Learn your role in the infant/child Chain of Survival

TRAINING MATERIALS
Each student will receive a CPR for Family and Friends manual.

COURSE ATTENDANCE CARD
Each participant will receive a course attendance card. There is no skill or written exam.
